Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assault and Mental Health

Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assault and Mental Health
Sexual assault can unfortunately happen to anyone. People may be sexually assaulted by their partners or sexually coerced and assaulted by powerful bosses and industry leaders, as shown during the #MeToo movement, and children can be sexually abused at home, by teachers or clergy members. Defined as any sexual behavior without clear consent from the victim, sexual assault can have devastating effects on the mental health of survivors.

Many sexual assault survivors suffer from a variety of mental health issues after assault, including:

– Depression
– PTSD
– Substance abuse disorders
– Eating disorders
– Anxiety

It’s important to note that each individual’s experience following sexual assault or abuse is unique. As seen in some child sexual abuse survivors, trauma from assaults can manifest into physical health problems later in life, including increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Seeking help for your trauma after an assault can feel impossible, but it’s an important step in maintaining your mental and physical health.
